 SO CLOSE
TO PARADISE (First
Run Features) 1998. Drama. 90 Minutes. Not rated. Mandarin with
English subtitles. A lot of
reviews on this film call it a 'noir' film and that it's very seductive,
almost downright sexy. This
movie is all of these things, but at the heart of the film is a
relationship between three people and how different people really are.
This is a story about two friends who end up becoming involved with
a Vietnamese girl through a series of circumstances, and throughout their
journey, both men fall in love with this girl.
What the audience doesn't really know is which person the girl is
really in love with, and it is not until the end that it is all revealed. While it's a little slow at parts, the film is actually quite
engrossing, and the acting is top notch.
The emotional ending is very satisfying because the audience has
gone on the journey with these people and in the end, we all want the same
things for these characters. Hopefully
they will be happy. Hopefully
they will have found love. The
ending hints at these things, but it is up to the audience to figure it
