GOREGOYLES:
The First Cut (Brimstone/
Helltimate) 92
minutes. Not Rated. Violence, gore. The Unholy Terror: directed by
Augustine Arredondo. While cleaning out his deceased Grandmother’s
house, a young man sees a painting that throws him into convulsions and
makes his eyeballs bleed. As he soon discovers, the bleeding man is some
sort of second coming of Christ. Depending which group you belong to, the
Catholic Church or a group of religious weirdoes, this second coming is
either good or bad and it’s up to the bleeding man to figure out who to
seek help from and trust. Berserkers: directed by Kevin Lindenmuth. An
evil Viking rises from the dead to inflict his evilness upon the world.
Hoping to stop him is a rag tag group of people, including a hot blonde,
camping in the woods.
Goregoyles: The First Cut is the first in a series of movies each
featuring two horror shorts by various independent filmmakers. Hosting
these fine double treats is a character named Uncle Dodo (played by Sébastien
Croteau, who use to be in the death metal band Necrotic Mutation), who
offers up some off color amusement before, during, and after the two
features. Both movies ooze with stomach churning yuckies; bone breaks in
Unholy Terror and self-intestine ingestion (say that 6,000 times fast) in
Berserkers. I found the overall production and acting quality to be better
in Unholy Terror, but Berserkers’ gore was the bloodiest and most
satisfying in terms of gore hunger. Nothing wrong with a little give and
take when it comes to buddy movies! Independent gore hounds will certainly
find themselves joyfully goregling with blood (I know, trying to be too
cute with the word “gore”) while watching Goregoyles. - Denis Sheehan
