THE
FAME
– Get On The Beat (Site)
There is so much about this 6 song ep that I shouldn’t like.
Start with the Billy Joel meets Journey melodies.
Add the REO Speedwagon meets Starship vocal delivery style of front
man Reno Bo. Not to mention
the stupid name of front man Reno Bo, and the silly band name, as well.
And then there’s the lame-assed lyrics and super slick 80s
hair-band production. And yet,
somehow, I can’t help but enjoy it, even after repeated listens.
Maybe it’s the way it takes me back to my teenage years, or how
much it reminds of the movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”.
Or maybe it’s the fact that they! keep each of their 6 songs
short and concise – 6 songs in under 25 minutes is a pretty good ratio
in my book. There’s also a
certain Raspberries/Records sort of early-power-pop feel to it, which is
nice in small doses like this. Bottom
line: probably too slick for some of you, but if you don’t mind that,
it’s a pretty good little pop record.
