MANIC
HISPANIC- Mijo Goes To Jr. College (BYO
Records) This disc goes so far up my alley that it actually catches me
taking a covert piss behind my favorite dumpster.
Manic Hispanic carjack a variety of punk rock classics and bring
‘em lowriding on into the barrio. They
keep the music more or less the same as the originals, but recast the
lyrics into a spicy Mexican-American mix of jail, gangs, cops, fighting,
drinking, cabrones and heinas. Oh yeah, it’s also fuckin’ hilarious a lot of the time.
The Clash’s “Brand New Cadillac” is reborn as “Brand New
Impala.” The Ramones’
“The KKK Took My Baby Away” becomes “The I.N.S. Took My Novia
Away.” Stiff Little
Fingers’ “Barbed Wire Love” comes out as “Barrio Love.”
And on and on it goes. I
think the most brilliant thing on Mijo
Goes To Jr. College is the way they take Sham 69’s “Sunday Morning
Nightmare” from East London to East L.A. with “Menudo Morning
Nightmare.” There was a
little spoken word part on Sham’s record with Cockney voice one yawning
and saying, “Oh, where am I?” Cockney
two snaps back, “You’re at ‘ome. Where do you think ya bleedin’ are?” Manic Hispanic begin their take of this song with a yawn of
their own, followed by Vato voice one saying, “Ah, donde estoy?”
The response is an exasperated “Ay! You’re in the casa.
Where do you think you are, pendejo?”
And it goes on to make Sham’s lighthearted hangover family
annoyances distinctly their own. It
just slays me. Other songs I really liked on this disc were “Tio’s Got A
Secret” (from the Germs’ “What We Do Is Secret”), “I Want To Be
A Cholo” (from The Vandals’ “Urban Struggle”) and “Cruise”
(from NOFX’s “The Brews”). Sometimes
these guys do sound like an old Cheech and Chong skit, but that don’t
bother me none. There are 16 songs on this sucka, and I like nearly all of
them. I suspect you will too.
