BEN
WEASEL- Fidatevi (lookoutrecords.com)
Disclosure: I am a fan of just about everything Ben Weasel has had his
hands on/in/around. Screeching Weasel, love them. Riverdales, love them.
His two newly published books (Like
Hell and Punk is a
Four Letter Word), love them. Fidatevi, the first time I listened to
this cd I friggin hated it. I hated it so much, I almost resigned from my
Presidency position of The Ben Weasel Fan Club (ok, that’s a joke).
However, as I write this review, the cd is growing on me. If you’re
looking for a clone of Screeching Weasel, look elsewhere. Although there
are some similarities between SW and the music here, Ben’s solo stuff
definitely stands alone. The first four tunes are very cool, very
surprising lyrically, and simply enjoyable. The fifth cut, “The Ship,”
is downright impossible to listen to. Not that the music is bad, but
Ben’s vocals sound bad. “Strangers” will shock the snot out of
Weasel fans with its acoustic and keyboard laden sound. You have to love
Dan Vapid’s backing vocals in “Indecision.” Aside from track five, I
love the first eight and I’m starting to warm up to the remaining six.
There are only a few certainties in life; death, taxes, and Ben Weasel
doing something you’ll like. – Denis Sheehan
