VAMPYRES
(Blue
Underground) 1974. Erotic drama/horror. 88 minutes. Not rated,
violence, nudity, sex. Fran (Marianne Morris) and Miriam (Anulka
Dziubinska), hot female vampyres (what’s the difference between vampyres
and vampires anyway?), shack up in a mansion together and roam the English
countryside looking to satisfy their thirst for blood. While Miriam simply
kills her victims, Fran decides to slowly bleed one of her victims, often
returning to him for sex and spot of blood. Also along for the ride is a
couple who squat in the front yard of the vampyres’ mansion. Bad
move….
First and foremost, Anulka Dziubinska (Playboy Playmate of the
Month May 1973) is an absolute babe. Second and not so foremost, the scene
in which the male squatter bites it struck me as one of the most violent
vampire kills I’ve ever seen. You may or may not agree with me, but I
bet the scene will shock you nonetheless. There is a lot of nudity, a lot
of soft core sex, and one hilarious shot of a female plumber's crack. The
eerie mansion and foggy countryside beautifully set Vampyres’
atmosphere. On the negative side, the plot is virtually nonexistent and
basically goes nowhere. We know how Fran and Miriam died, but how they
actually became vampires, sorry, vampyres is never explained. However, and
luckily for Vampyres, the previously written positives help camouflage the
lack of an actual storyline. As enjoyable as I found Vampyres, I was most
surprised, and pleased, at the DVD extra interview with vamps Marianne
Morris and Anulka Dziubinska; although this interview took place nearly 30
years after the production of Vampyres, the two women have yet to hit the
wall and both are still drop dead gorgeous (especially my sweet Anulka).
Other extras include; audio commentary by director Jose Ramone Larraz and
producer Brian Smedley-Aston, trailers, poster/still gallery, few
snapshots of my sweet Anulka, and a few other notables. Bloody fun time,
indeed. – Denis Sheehan
