THE
RESTAURATEUR (First Run
Features) 2010. Documentary. 57 minutes. Not rated.
Twelve years ago,
successful restaurateur Danny Meyer and his team decided to open not one,
but two restaurants in New York’s Madison Square Park…and director
Roger Sherman was there and captured all of it up until about 2010.
Man, talk about a project (that’s directed to Danny and Roger)!
More intimate than instructive, The Restaurateur wonderfully
captures the anguish and anxiety of opening
a restaurant and doing whatever it takes to keep it open and successful;
changing personal, chef hunting, menus, floor layout, and everything else
under the sun. Although the pace is slow and not very exciting, like most
Roger Sherman documentaries, you cannot help feel the compelling events
happening in front of you grabbing your shirt and pulling you in; like
most Roger Sherman documentaries. Foodie fans will dig this DVD…and
appreciate seeing a fully haired Tom Colicchio (douchie bald chef/host of
Bravo’s Top Chef). A 27 minute extra brings the story right up to the
point of DVD release. –Denis Sheehan
